Job Description
About Anthropic
At Anthropic, our mission is to develop AI systems that are reliable, interpretable, and steerable. We aim to make AI safe and beneficial both for individual users and society as a whole. Our rapidly growing team brings together dedicated researchers, engineers, policy specialists, and business leaders to build AI that makes a positive impact.
About the Role
Running machine learning algorithms at our scale means tackling unique systems challenges. As a Performance Engineer, you’ll identify these challenges and design solutions that improve the throughput and resilience of our largest distributed systems. Ideal candidates will have experience solving complex, large-scale systems problems and an eagerness to deepen their expertise in machine learning.
You may be a great fit if you:
- Bring strong software engineering or machine learning experience, especially at supercomputing scale
- Are driven by results and comfortable adapting to achieve meaningful impact
- Step up to fill gaps, even beyond your core responsibilities
- Enjoy pair programming (we do it often!)
- Want to expand your knowledge of machine learning research
- Care deeply about the societal effects of your work
Additional experience that would be valuable:
- Designing and maintaining high-performance, large-scale ML systems
- GPU and accelerator programming
- Working on internals of ML frameworks
- Operating system internals
- Language modeling with transformers
Examples of projects you could work on:
- Developing low-latency, high-throughput sampling for large language models
- Writing GPU kernels to enable low-precision inference
- Creating custom load-balancing algorithms to improve serving efficiency
- Building quantitative models to track and forecast system performance
- Designing fault-tolerant distributed systems in complex network environments
- Diagnosing kernel-level network latency in containerized setups
Deadline to Apply
We review applications on a rolling basis — there is no fixed deadline.
Compensation
Annual Salary Range:
$315,000 – $560,000 USD
Logistics
Education: A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience is required.
Hybrid Work Policy: Team members are expected to work onsite at least 25% of the time. Some roles may require additional in-office presence.
Visa Sponsorship: We can sponsor visas for many positions and work with an immigration lawyer to support successful candidates. However, sponsorship is not possible in every situation. If we extend you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to assist with a visa.
A Note on Applying
Even if you don’t meet every qualification, we encourage you to apply. Research has shown that candidates from underrepresented backgrounds often underestimate their suitability for a role. If you’re interested in our mission, please consider submitting an application. Because our work has significant social and ethical dimensions, we believe diverse perspectives are essential.
What Sets Us Apart
We approach AI research as “big science,” focusing our efforts as one unified team on a small number of ambitious projects that advance our goal of building steerable, trustworthy AI. We see AI research as an empirical discipline — much like physics or biology — and prioritize work that moves us toward our long-term objectives rather than small, isolated problems. Collaboration is central to how we work, and we hold frequent discussions to ensure our efforts are directed at the highest-impact questions. Strong communication skills are highly valued here.
To better understand our work, explore our recent publications. Many of our research directions build on prior efforts, including GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI and Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
