Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join our ML Enablement – Models team. In this role, you will lead innovative MLOps projects that empower internal teams—such as Search, Ads, Personalization, and Trust & Safety—to experiment and iterate faster.

This is a senior-level position where you will take ownership of medium to high complexity initiatives that directly impact ML modelers and engineers across Etsy. We’re looking for someone with deep expertise in ML, DL, and MLOps who can deliver scalable, high-performance solutions.

You will report to the Senior Engineering Manager and work closely with cross-functional teams to shape architecture, drive technical decisions, and mentor others.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead software architecture design and development for ML/MLOps solutions.
• Plan and coordinate projects at both strategic (annual/quarterly) and tactical (sprint-level) scales.
• Oversee production support for internal ML services.
• Represent the Models team in planning sessions, cross-team collaboration, and technical leadership forums.
• Mentor and support colleagues, raising the overall technical bar within the team.
• Deliver solutions that improve ML experimentation, optimization, deployment, and inference workflows.

About the Models Team

The Models team delivers robust technology and platform solutions for the full ML lifecycle—from training and optimization to deployment and inference. Our mission is to enable faster experimentation, smoother productionization of ML models, and seamless integration into the Etsy tech ecosystem.

What You’ll Bring

We’re looking for a leader with both technical depth and collaborative spirit:

• Technical Expertise
• Proven experience building internet-scale systems with ML and MLOps.
• Hands-on ML modeling and training experience using PyTorch and/or TensorFlow, with strong theoretical knowledge of ML/DL models for ranking, recommendation systems, and LLMs (bonus).
• Skilled in Python, with experience in Java or Scala a plus.
• Familiarity with ML/DL frameworks: TensorFlow, PyTorch, Spark, Airflow, Kubeflow.
• Experience with cloud platforms such as GCP (Vertex AI), AWS (AI Platform), and Terraform.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems, compute clusters, and memory architectures in public cloud environments.
• Strong background in back-end engineering, including designing, deploying, and supporting microservices in production.
• Knowledge of performance optimization and cost analysis for large-scale systems.
• Awareness of the broader MLOps ecosystem, including state-of-the-art optimization techniques.
