Salary Range: $183,000 – $216,000

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Machine Learning Engineer to join our Recommendation Ranking team. This team develops ML models that power personalization and recommendation ranking across Etsy.com and the Etsy mobile app, improving the experience for more than 90 million buyers.

You’ll collaborate with applied scientists, software engineers, and product stakeholders to design and deliver innovative ML solutions in areas such as ranking, distributed training and serving, large language models (LLMs), and real-time systems.

This role reports to the Senior Engineering Manager and includes salary, equity, performance bonus eligibility, and a comprehensive benefits package to support you and your family.

Location: We are considering U.S.-based candidates. Applicants near Etsy’s Brooklyn office or the San Francisco Bay Area may be prioritized. Those within commuting distance should expect in-office attendance once or twice a week, depending on proximity.

What You’ll Do

• Partner with scientists, engineers, product managers, and designers to shape the future of Etsy’s recommendation systems.
• Lead technical decision-making, guide projects, and mentor engineers within the team.
• Build scalable pipelines to process large datasets and support ML workflows.
• Prototype, optimize, and productionize ML models that drive measurable impact.
• Collaborate on designing robust end-to-end solutions with cross-functional partners.
• Run experiments (including A/B tests) to measure the effectiveness of ML models and pipelines.
• Contribute to evolving the technical direction of our recommendation platform.

What We’re Looking For

• Proven experience applying ML techniques to real-world problems.
• Expertise in at least one field: deep learning, multi-modal learning, NLP, graph learning, distributed training/serving, or ML infrastructure.
• Experience working with large datasets and building scalable data pipelines.
• Proficiency with some of our core tools: Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Spark, PySpark, Scala, Airflow.
• Ability to write clean, maintainable, and testable code.
• Strong collaboration skills and comfort working across diverse teams.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or related field) plus at least two years of industry experience.
