Joining HNTB means contributing to projects that align with national priorities like transportation infrastructure development and long-term mobility planning. With our continued growth across Massachusetts and Rhode Island, this is an exciting opportunity for an experienced traffic engineer to lead, mentor, and innovate within a collaborative environment.
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Traffic Engineer to manage a dedicated team of 3–6 traffic engineers within our Boston office. This role combines technical leadership, project management, and mentoring responsibilities to support the delivery of critical transportation and traffic design projects from concept through construction.
You will lead high-profile projects such as corridor and intersection improvements, complete street designs, and major interchange reconstructions. Our team has successfully completed complex initiatives including the I-495/I-90 Interchange Improvements Project and the Rehabilitation of I-90 over Foss Reservoir in Framingham—projects that demonstrate our technical excellence and public impact.
Key Responsibilities

- Lead section operations, including budgeting, forecasting, and staff development.
- Mentor and train junior engineers while fostering professional growth and team performance.
- Collaborate across departments to optimize resources and share expertise on multidisciplinary projects.
- Guide project pursuits using HNTB’s strategic and sophisticated sales approach (SSA).
- Manage project scopes, budgets, and quality standards through all delivery stages.
- Support proposal preparation, client presentations, and business development activities.
- Maintain long-term client relationships and ensure ongoing satisfaction.
- Oversee recruitment, performance reviews, and succession planning within the section.
- Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
- Minimum 8 years of relevant professional experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory capacity.
Preferred:
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Massachusetts (or eligible within 6 months).
- 10+ years of experience in transportation or traffic engineering.
- Proficiency with Synchro, Sidra, HCS, and VISSIM software.
- Hands-on experience delivering projects for MassDOT (RIDOT experience a plus).
- Strong coordination experience across highway, environmental, and structural disciplines.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and manage diverse project teams.
What You’ll Bring
- Expertise in traffic design, analysis, and project delivery.
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to quality assurance and continuous improvement.
