- Teaching Assistant/Associate Professor – Environmental Literature and American Democracy

Appalachian State University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track Teaching Assistant or Associate Professor position in Environmental Literature and Rhetorics of American Democracy and Discourse. The position is expected to begin in August 2026, pending final administrative approval.
This role involves teaching a 4/4 course load focusing on Environmental Literature and American Democracy, including ENG 2220: Environmental Literature, Writing, and Film, ENG 3715: Literature and the Environment, and ENG 2330: Discourse and Democracy as part of the Foundations of American Democracy program. The selected candidate may also teach courses at the General Education and upper levels depending on departmental needs. Faculty responsibilities include serving on departmental committees and contributing to student development through inclusive and critical teaching practices.

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric, American Studies, or a closely related interdisciplinary humanities field, completed by August 2026, and evidence of successful university-level teaching. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in Environmental Humanities, Democracy Studies, or related fields, and those who demonstrate a commitment to supporting diverse student populations.
Applicants who are ABD (All But Dissertation) will be considered with a temporary reduction in rank and salary until the Ph.D. is awarded. Verification of dissertation defense must be submitted by July 31, 2026, for a fall start. Once the degree is completed, the candidate’s rank and salary will be adjusted accordingly.
