About the Role

As the Department Manager, you’ll oversee the planning, design, development, and delivery of electrical engineering projects. You’ll balance team leadership with technical oversight, making sure project scopes, budgets, timelines, and quality standards are consistently met.

This position plays a key role in coordinating staffing schedules, setting priorities, and ensuring clients receive the right expertise at the right time. You will also champion professional development by mentoring engineers, promoting collaboration across offices, and supporting a strong, inclusive team culture.

Key Responsibilities

Department Leadership

• Lead, mentor, and support the growth of the electrical engineering team.
• Oversee hiring, staff development, performance reviews, succession planning, and retention.
• Assign staff to projects and manage department workload and priorities.

Project & Operations Management

• Develop and manage the department’s operating budget and forecasts.
• Guide project delivery activities—including scope, schedules, budgets, technical reviews, and quality assurance.
• Lead or assist in technical tasks such as research, design, reports, specifications, and plan preparation.
• Provide supervision to multiple workgroups, typically overseeing 17–20+ employees.

Strategic & Business Development

• Support HNTB’s firmwide strategic goals and project pursuit processes.
• Participate in marketing and business development activities, including proposal preparation, interviews, and client engagement.
• Maintain strong client relationships to ensure satisfaction and future opportunities.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Work closely with other engineering disciplines and offices on multi-discipline, multi-location projects.
• Coordinate with internal teams to share work, exchange expertise, and maintain consistent delivery standards.

What You Need

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
• Minimum 10 years of relevant engineering experience.
• At least 2 years of supervisory or team-lead experience.

What You’ll Bring

Hands-on experience with electrical design for power and communications infrastructure, including:

• Street lighting
• Traffic signals
• Area and pedestrian lighting
• Aesthetic lighting
• Other complex electrical systems

Ability to collaborate with multi-discipline teams across different HNTB offices.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• 4+ years of supervisory experience.

Compensation

• Estimated pay range for New Jersey: $161,512.36 – $281,454.83
  Actual compensation depends on experience, skills, qualifications, and work location.
