Bridge Engineer (Professional Engineer – PE)

About the Role

This position is for a Bridge Engineer (PE) who will manage and perform structural engineering work on a range of bridge design projects, from small assignments to large-scale, multi-disciplinary infrastructure developments. The selected engineer will oversee design processes, coordinate with other disciplines, supervise junior staff, and maintain close collaboration with clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform bridge design and structural analysis for various transportation systems, including primary, secondary, and interstate networks.
  • Manage coordination with other engineering disciplines to ensure that project scopes, budgets, and deadlines are met.
  • Supervise and guide engineers-in-training (EITs) and CAD technicians assigned to projects.
  • Prepare project scopes, proposals, and fee estimates for bridge design assignments.
  • Oversee construction support activities, such as reviewing shop drawings, conducting field visits, and responding to technical inquiries.
  • Perform load ratings, bridge rehabilitation, and condition assessments according to the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation.
  • Conduct bridge safety inspections and prepare reports based on field assessments.
  • Maintain compliance with quality control standards and internal procedures.
  • Present project updates to clients, contractors, and government representatives during different project phases.
  • Support business development initiatives and help maintain long-term client relationships.
  • Lead technical training sessions and contribute to the professional development of junior engineers.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) in at least one U.S. state, with eligibility for reciprocity preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (structural focus) from an ABET-accredited program.
  • A master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is preferred.
  • Strong ability to write reports, communicate effectively, and make presentations to clients and teams.
  • Proven leadership and mentoring capabilities within multidisciplinary environments.
  • Active participation in professional organizations such as NSPE, ASCE, ASHE, or NCSEA is desirable.
  • Eligibility as a Bridge Safety Inspection Team Leader under NBIS requirements is preferred.

Preferred Experience

  • Minimum of four years of bridge engineering experience in consulting.
  • Proficiency in design and analysis software such as MicroStation, GeoPak, LEAP Bridge Enterprise, MDX, and AASHTOWare Bridge.
  • Experience with new bridge design, rehabilitation, and repair projects involving various structural materials including concrete, prestressed concrete, and steel.
  • Familiarity with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges.
  • Experience working on federal, state, and municipal projects, including Design-Build and P3 project delivery methods.
  • Prior experience in bridge inspection under the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) is advantageous.

 

Working Environment

Clark Nexsen, a JMT Company, promotes a hybrid working model that balances in-office collaboration and remote flexibility. The selected candidate is expected to work from a JMT office at least three days a week or as required by project needs.
