Project Engineer – Transportation (Atlanta, GA)

About the Role
HNTB is seeking a driven and experienced Project Engineer to join our growing Atlanta team. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to some of Georgia’s most complex and high-impact transportation projects while working alongside a team of industry-leading professionals. The role is ideally suited for someone with a strong background in transportation engineering, proven leadership in plan development, and hands-on experience with Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) projects. Proficiency in OpenRoads Designer is required.

Key Responsibilities

As a Project Engineer, you will:

  • Lead the development, production, and modification of design calculations, reports, plans, and specifications.
  • Work closely with project managers to conduct research, prepare designs, and deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Apply engineering principles, standards, and GDOT guidelines to projects of varying size and complexity.
  • Develop both conceptual and detailed roadway designs using OpenRoads Designer and other industry-standard software.
  • Address design challenges through collaboration, client interaction, and creative problem-solving.
  • Mentor and review the work of junior engineers, offering constructive feedback and fostering professional growth.
  • Coordinate technical aspects with clients, teaming partners, and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Support marketing efforts by contributing to proposals and assisting in the development of project scopes and budgets.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and at least 6 years of relevant experience, or
  • Master’s degree in Engineering and at least 5 years of relevant experience, or
  • PhD in Engineering and at least 4 years of relevant experience.

Preferred

  • Minimum of 4 years of GDOT project experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Active involvement in professional organizations such as ASHE, ASCE, or ITE.

What You’ll Bring

  • Hands-on leadership in transportation infrastructure projects, from concept through final design.
  • Strong coordination skills to manage schedules, budgets, and deliverables across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven ability to mentor and support early-career engineers and designers.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing plans, specifications, and cost estimates that align with GDOT standards.
  • Proficiency in OpenRoads Designer for roadway design, modeling, and production.
  • Excellent communication skills with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams.
  • Experience assisting project managers with quality control, technical input, and client-facing presentations.
